POWER: The Road to Open Source - Peter Czanik, One Identity
Peter has been a POWER user for 27 years and Open Source contributor for 25 years. From this subjective history lesson you can learn, how the relation of POWER and Open Source changed in the nearly three decades: RS6000, PowerMac, Genesi, POWER, OpenPOWER. One interesting trend is that while at first a few open source applications ran on top of AIX, a closed OS, it changed to a fully open source ecosystem, and now commercial applications, like SAP Hana, run on top of open source. It is Linux running in little Endian mode, which makes porting and optimizing software easier. The other trend is, that developers are a lot more active when they can build software natively on the desktop and run it in the cloud. There were many active developers before 2010, most of them disappeared when only high end servers were actively produced, and with the Raptor workstations development is active again.

Open Hardware GNU/Linux PPC64 Laptop Potential - Roberto Innocenti, Power Progress Community (not profit association)
Around 6 years back, we started as a group of FOSS,PowerPC and Open Hardware enthusiasts, with beginning to work on PowerPC Notebook project which was designed around GNU/Linux using Open Hardware. We had very limited funding with limited skills to work. But our enthusiasm and motivation led us to reach fabrication stage for the motherboard. Finally this year we could successfully design its PCB with the help of collaborators and limited funding from donors. There were many challenges faced in this process. Since PowerPC processors have been around for more than 2 decades, but the current implementation on Notebook was difficult to take in the market. Coming to the performance in Big Endian mode is maximized in this with many software need to be patched. In future we plan to upgrade our PCB design to the more recent packaging technology for the processor. Also, with increasing collaborators, it would be possible to design more smaller and cheaper PowerPC board.

X2Go: Free/Libre/OpenSource Remote Desktop and Remote Application Services for Linux - on POWER - Stefan Baur, BAUR-ITCS UG (haftungsbeschränkt)
When people read the term "POWER" in a CPU related context, they usually either think of the old PowerPC-based computers of the past, or of modern-day number-crunching machines, fast GPUs, AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and the like. What most people aren't aware of is that they can also run full Linux desktops - or single Linux GUI applications - on their POWER servers, and access them over the Internet. X2Go enables them to do so, but way faster than VNC or classic X-forwarding over SSH, more akin to Windows RDP and Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp. X2Go can be used for remote administration as well as for a multi-user graphical terminal server environment, using Linux on POWER, rather than MS Windows on Intel. This talk will be a POWER-centric demo of X2Go's current features, with an additional outlook of upcoming features that are currently in beta / in development.

The POWER is with us, let's put it to work! - Rafael Sene, IBM
We have the POWER, let's put it to work and expand its reach by creating a healthy ecosystem to empower developers: the fuel that keeps the ecosystem moving and evolving. Developers needs access to resources that can empower them to get the most of their applications and amaze their customers. As the architecture that is the core of the #1 and #2 fastest supercomputers in the world, POWER is where they need to be, but how developers can leverage it as part of their daily activities? This presentation will demonstrate how everyone can get free and paid access to the POWER architecture and start building, porting and tuning their applications right away. It will show how to build on POWER using GitHub, Travis CI, and GitLab, create multi-arch container images and how to deploy a build pipeline using OpenShift on Power.
